On May 8, 1945, the Allied nations formally accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany forces, thereby ending the conflict in Europe.
The world's economic policymakers will gather in Washington D.C. on April 17th for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank's spring meetings. A recent study by the IMF into the world's growth potential following the 2007-2009 financial crisis is expected to frame the discussions. The meetings will also include a seminar on Islamic finance after the IMF endorsed the principles of Islamic banking.
Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first black president who steered his nation out of apartheid and into multi-race democracy, died late on Thursday at the age of 95 after months of illness. A programme of events has included a memorial service, attended by International leaders and Heads of State, at the FNB Stadium in Soweto. Mandela's body will now lie in state at the Union Buildings in Pretoria until Saturday, followed by a private funeral and burial at his Eastern Cape ancestral home of Qunu.

World leaders will gather in New York city for the sixty-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly from 24th September to 4th October 2013. On the table for discussion this year will be a report on existing and potential threats from the cyber-sphere, nuclear disarmament and international migration and development. The ongoing crisis in Syria is also expected to feature on the agenda. Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, will address the assembly for the first time.
The eighth meeting of G20 leaders will take place at the Constantine Palace in St. Petersburg on September 5th & 6th. The summit hopes to map out a solution to one of the forum’s main tasks: the stimulation of economic growth around the world. As the host country, Russia will place investment procurement at the top of the agenda. The escalating violence in Syria is also expected to feature in discussions.
Following endorsement of Mr Rouhani's election by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at a ceremony in Tehran, Rohani will go on to take the oath of office in Majlis on Sunday, 4th August. He succeeds Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, whose two legally allowed consecutive terms end on Saturday. Rohani won the June 14 presidential election with 50.7 percent of a total of 36, 704, 156 ballots. Voter turnout in the election was 72.7 percent.
The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy, Kensington Palace has announced. The baby was delivered at 16:24 BST, weighing 8lb 6oz, with the Duke of Cambridge present for the birth.
Britain’s former Prime Minister, Baroness Margaret Thatcher, has died aged 87 this morning following a stroke, according to her spokesman. Baroness Thatcher was Conservative Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990 and was the first woman to hold the post.
